Summer is here! We’re excited for days in the sun, catching lightning bugs, and yummy summertime foods. Join us for stories in the shop that will focus on foods, the kitchen, and the summer season.

In June we will be reading Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi.

Perdita Lee may appear your average British schoolgirl; Harriet Lee may seem just a working mother trying to penetrate the school social hierarchy; but there are signs that they might not be as normal as they think they are. For one thing, they share a gold-painted, seventh-floor walk-up apartment with some surprisingly verbal vegetation. And then there’s the gingerbread they bake. Londoners may find themselves able to take or leave it, but it’s very popular in Druhastrana, the faraway (maybe nonexistent) land of Harriet’s youth. Many twists, turns, and mysteries along the way as we follow the Lee’s on their journey.

Purchase of the book from the shop is not required, but we do have copies available.

Celebrate the San Juan Feast Day with Casa Nûñez! Traditional Puerto Rican cuisine is on the menu in June for this fun demonstration. You’re in the kitchen, watching these amazing dishes be created! Ask questions and receive tips and tricks from these seasoned chefs!

Susie and Iván Núñez have developed a comfortable blend of international culinary styles that has evolved into the distinctive Casa Núñez flavor. Iván learned the traditional cooking of his native Puerto Rico from his grandmother (“A,” short for Angela) and his great-aunt (Titi Maria). As a young man, he not only owned a successful Mexican restaurant called Paso Real in New Mexico, but also placed third in the prestigious Chilympiad in San Marcos, Texas. He later married Susie in Gibraltar and the pair made their first home together in Madrid, Spain.  Through his Air Force Attaché duty at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, the couple began collecting authentic recipes from both Spanish and third-country acquaintances. They had regular reasons to invite a wide variety of guests to the Núñez home for meals and the Casa Núñez entertainment style was born. Using traditional elements from both the Mediterranean and Puerto Rico, Susie and Iván have fully incorporated the rustic arts of food preparation into their daily cooking and are happy to share those practices.

Hang out with us on Friday mornings and have fun with the kids. Kiddos will definitely have a good time at this morning of crafts, books, and snack creation!

Please note that registration is required for this event to ensure we have enough supplies for all of our guests.

Do you enjoy cooking but you don’t have the space? Want to make some new friends that enjoy cooking? Want to bring a group to learn some new recipes? We’ll all be cooking together and sharing the meal.

We’re doing something a little bit different this month! We’ll be cooking from Paul Lowe’s Eat&Make, making dinner together and a craft from the book as well! The menu will include: Zucchini Salad with goat cheese, Feta and Lemon Dip with veggies, Pasta with roasted butternut squash, garlic and lemon, and Pavlova with vanilla cream and berries. After dinner we’ll make Fork Bookends!  This is a hands-on evening of cooking with friends, perfect for a double, triple, or quadruple date with friends, or a girls night out. One of our Bookshop staff will facilitate the evening, but you get to make this your own! While we are not able to serve alcoholic beverages, you are welcome to bring your own for the evening. We are limited to 8 guests for this event, so sign up early!
